3 crucial keys to steer your family in the right direction
Have you ever tried to go somewhere important without a GPS these days? My dinosaur GPS have been acting up lately and it’s not good.
Does anybody use regular paper maps anymore? Just wondering.
Here’s a similar thought: Have you tried to lead your family in a certain direction, only to discover your inner GPS is not working quite right? Humm
Have you tried establishing in your family a system of belief, values, standards and direction only to feel incapable of taking them there?
How about this one: Ever felt like an old dinosaur GPS for life? Culture and kids seem to think you’re not able to “acquire” the “satellite” that leads you in the right direction.
One of the worse feelings is attempting to take your family somewhere in life with a cloudy sense of direction.
I know what this feels like. Sometimes in the midst of our excitement to go somewhere in life we tend to lose our direction or the reason why we’re going there in the first place.
Let me ask you, during this Christmas season, do you know where you’re going to take your family? I don’t mean looking at lights and shopping for Christmas gifts.
What I mean is: Are you planning to lead your family with a clear vision, direction and purpose leading them into the next year?
If not, don’t fret, there’s hope – there’s a way.
For example: I’m reminded of a particular incident that took place over two thousand years ago.
A group of Wise men traveled to Jerusalem saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2). Remember this story?
Let me clarify this incident just a bit and give you the main points I want to emphasize on this post.
1. These Wise Men were the professional astronomers of the day. They studied the stars and they were very familiar with seasons and cycles of life. They also knew the prophecies in the Holy Scriptures.
In other words, these weren’t novice at knowing the existence of this King of the Jews - They knew it.
2. These Wise Men recognized and followed the star that came up the moment Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea. They followed it for a reason.
3. They were also inquisitive. They asked where Jesus was because they had seen the star.
Here’s an important point – somehow, somewhere in their two year travel, as a friend of mine put it, “they must’ve lost sight of the star.”
They didn’t have a two day travel; it was a two year travel. A Lot went on during those two years and it seemed possible they lost sight of the star.
4. They knew who they were looking for, but they didn’t know where he was – exactly.
Here’s my point; these incredible Wise Men knew the star showed where King Jesus was born, but somewhere along the way, they may have lost sight of it.
I’m not sure if it was due to a cloudy season, rainy season, or what. The Bible doesn’t specify.
All I know is that they had seen the star but now they missed its exact location.
Notice the clue here; they asked everyone in town, including chief priests and scribes that confirmed to them that the Christ was born in Bethlehem. So off they went.
As they went to Bethlehem the star appeared to them once again, and it moved in the right direction leading them to the exact place where Jesus the King was born.
You might wonder, what does this have to do with your marriage and your family?
The answer is: Everything.
You may have had big dreams for your marriage and for your family but it’s possible that you may have lost sight of your destination (star). You wanted to reach for the stars and all you got to see what the light posts.
You may have “seen stars” during the first years of your marriage and the first couple of years of your kids’ birth. Now, all you see is chores, getting by and wondering how to make life happen.
Let me remind you, that often times God gives us dreams, visions and the anticipation to accomplish great things for our families and at some point in time we tend to lose sight of it. It happens to the best of us.
One thing the Wise Men didn’t lose sight of during their travels – they knew their “why.” They knew why they were looking for the king – to worship Him, to pay him homage, respect, reverence and bring him gifts.
Question: What is it that you want for your marriage? For your family? A better question is: Why?
You may have lost sight of the place. You may have lost your direction, your destiny or even your desire due to “life” wearing you out, but you’ve not lost your why.
If you know your why, then you’ll find your “where.”
Your “where” is not as important as your “why.”
So what can you do to re-synchronize the “GPS” of your life to lead you in the right direction?
Here are 3 crucial keys to steer your family in the right direction
Know your “why.” Know the reason, the vision, and the dream to why you want to provide the right direction for your family. This your reference point.
1. Start moving with what you’ve got right now. Don’t wait to get all your ducks in a row or all your cards on the table. Move with what you’ve got. Start somewhere.
If it’s improving your marriage, start with a daily cup of coffee and a devotional book to read together.
If it’s helping your kids with direction for their lives, and their character, start with reading the Psalms and Proverbs to them during dinner or before bedtime.
This will develop discussions that will help you pinpoint the needs at hand, and the strengths to develop.
2. Ask questions. Read materials such as this blog, as well as others. Read other good books in areas you want help on. Ask your pastor for direction.
You can even ask me HERE and I’ll do my best to lead you in the right direction. We’re not born knowing everything – we all need some fresh direction.
See, sometimes our atmosphere gets a little cloudy and we tend the lose direction for a while. But as long as we know why we’re going, we’ll continue to move forward with a clearer direction. God will place the right people in your path to direct you in the right direction – the way of the star.
3. Let the “Star” guide you. No I don’t mean to sound mystic here. I’m referring to Jesus Christ himself. Let him guide you in your own travel – your pursuit of life – your “why”.
I too had lost my direction at one point.I took my leadership at home very seriously, but the cares of life cause a great deal of cloudiness in my “vision” that let me nowhere except to hang on and survive.
More than fifteen years ago, we learned, we asked questions and we moved forward with vision, direction, and a roadmap to get there.
This is why I provide this free course, to help families establish themselves in the way they need to go. It has transformed our lives and I know it will transform yours.
Go ahead and download it and start moving in the right direction for your life and your family.
I trust that this Christmas Season you begins the memorable process to your destiny, your purpose and your “why.”
Follow the Star of Christmas and let him lead you in the right direction.
