You were created for greatness! Let me say that again: YOU WERE CREATED FOR GREATNESS! (I use caps to make sure you heard me loud and clear, but not yelling :-) ).
I know you might’ve heard that before. The reality is that most of us don’t believe it. We have learned to settle for the “status quo,” or for “average.” To settle for less than what we were designed for is slow suicide – the short-changing of a society – the gypping of friends and circles of influence.
What you were designed for
Let me put it to you another way; to the degree that you believe what you were designed for, is to the degree that you will go after your dreams. In other words, if you don’t believe you were created for greatness, you will settle for much, much less.
“to the degree that you believe what you were designed for, is to the degree that you will go after your dreams. “ (click to tweet that)
I remember when I was in high school, I used to hang around two different crowds, the “cool dudes” and the “thugs.” I know weird right? Its usually one of the other.
I usually make friends fairly easy. I’m a friendly guy, so it was easy for both parties to draw me into their circle of friends. As time went on, I realized that my identity was being formed and shaped by both parties. The teachers and the principle were starting to look at me differently.
Though I never did drugs in school, yet I would participate in some of their “during school” activities, like skipping school, going to the lake, and hang out, etc. Just to be tough and beat the system. Stupid, I know. But it was “cool” – NOT.
The new standard
Not long, I realized that I was stuck and needed to set a new standard, and play by a different set of rules. I wanted to succeed in life and most of them boys were going nowhere fast. In fact, some of them had dreams of becoming big time drug dealers (this was back in the 70s). Some, I heard, have even gotten killed during some of their activities.
I started to distant myself from such crowds and started to hang out with my church friends. At first, some of their parents didn’t know how to take me, but it wasn’t long before I won their hearts.
Something had to be done
I knew that my identity had to be shaped differently. Of course I didn’t think of it in these terms, I didn’t even know what identity was. But I knew how I was feeling and that God was leading my life differently. Something had to be done about it.
Depending upon where you are raised or what your environment has been, your values, belief systems and ambitions have been (or will be) molded accordingly. In other words, your circle of influence will brand you. (you can TWEET that one too)
The truth is, we are always being influenced while at the same time influencing others. So I’m going to post two questions for you to think about:
1. How have you been influenced and shaped by others?
2. How are you influencing and shaping others?
You might say: What does it matter? I just want to live a happy life and not worry about others. Oh I get that. Truth is, no matter what you do, you will influence others – both young and old.
A greater truth is that you have been influenced by the very nature of your influence and society depends on you to influence them. It’s the way the world turns, my friend.

Success in life is not about making money and buying lots of toys. Rather, those that have become successful in life was due to their influence – not just because of their talents or skills. They used what they knew, out of who they were in order to influence others around them and that made them successful.
As late Zig Ziglar put it once: “you are what you are by what goes into your mind.” Said another way: you are who you are and what you are by the influence around you.
Influence and Improvement
It is important to recognize where we came from and where we’re going. If the current influence is misleading – then it must be changed. If our growing up years of influence were not good, then it’s time for improvement.
This sounds like more work than it is. I will continue to provide you with information to show you how the entire process of impacting your Now as well as your future, is rather simple and most of it has already been done for you.
Remember, out of your identity your life flows (wow, you can tweet that one too, it’s a true statement). Let’s pick this topic up on another post. Until then, remember that you were created for GREATNESS!
