Why bother memorizing scripture? Isn’t it just a waste of time?
Just look it up on your electronic device – right?
Speaking from personal experience – when I was in my teens and early twenties I listened to soft rock, love songs, and contemporary Christian music.
Now fast forward with me to my 40’s almost 50’s – when I walk into a store or restaurant and they are playing a song from my teen years and early 20’s, guess what I can do…..yep you guessed it – I sing right along with the song not missing a word. I have the song memorized and it has stayed with me all these years. I do not have to look it up on an electronic device – it's a part of me.
So to answer the question at the beginning – "why bother memorizing scripture?" When Scripture is memorized – it becomes a part of you. Because it becomes a part of you, the Word is quick to come to mind when you may find yourself in an uncomfortable/tragic/sad/turbulent/fearful situation.
Here is an example. When my children were growing up one of the first scriptures I taught them was, "God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7) – along with hand motions to help them remember.
My children have shared with me how that scripture has encouraged, helped and directed them during some difficult time of their lives. The scripture was a part of them and they did not have to go look it up, it was right there in their time of need.
All of us humans go through uncomfortable/tragic/sad/turbulent/fearful times in our lives here on earth. Whatever situation you may find yourself in – find, read and memorize scripture to get you through - on the other side of victory.
The scripture that you take the time to memorize will not only help you now, but at some point later as well. Tweet This Too.
Who knows, maybe you’ll be able to share that memorized scripture with someone else during their time of need, or an encouragement while discovering their life's purpose.
Remember – electronic devices have to be recharged, but the Word of God never runs low on battery life and does not need a cell tower to work effectively.
Share a victorious experience you had as a result of a memorized scripture. You never know how your story may help someone else today. Share below.
