In my line of work I meet all kinds of great people from all walks of life. Whether layman or professional, young or old - most of them have expressed a common concern that often lead me to a coaching or counseling session.
Their troubled hearts would speak and their mouths begin to utter comments like these: “I’m still trying to figure out what to do with my life.” “I’m just trying to understand God’s will for my life.” “I’m trying to figure out what I’m supposed to do with my life.”
We all have a purpose in this life.
You have a specific purpose.
One of the greatest longings of the human soul is to pursue the reasons for existence.
Because purpose propels the ability to influence and control circumstances which, helps correct problems and influence others.
There are some important things that I have done that have helped me developed my purpose for living. A conscientious review of these areas is important to become influential as well as walk on purpose.
Here are just 4 areas that can help you develop your purpose and personal branding for influence:
I. Explore your heart’s desires
What is the “heart beat” of your soul? In other words, what inspires you? What wakes you up? What catches your interest?
Let me put it another way, what brings tears of joy to your eyes? What causes your heart to leap for joy and excitement? (no, I’m not talking about the girl or guy of your dreams here). What is it, that makes you feel fulfilled when you do it or when you think about becoming – even if it’s only in your mind? (In the mind is a great start).
These are important questions to consider when exploring your heart’s desires. Your passion is hidden in your desires, which is the seed to your brand. (you can tweet that)
Listen, your branding deals with your belief system, your outlook in life, your character, the way you carry yourself and the way you function. It is this brand that others want to model after – the brand others want to hang around with and enjoy.
It is up to you, however, to develop, and grow in your own personal branding.
People want good name brand items to buy or wear. Your personal branding must be costly, valuable and honorable for others to want to spend their lives with it and “wear it.”
It is, however, your responsibility, and nobody else’s, to nurture, and furnish the right elements to enhance, and develop your own brand. Your personal brand is all about who you are and what you want to be known for. This brand is developed form the inside out.
(you can tweet this too)
The nature of your relationships, education, inspiration and even God himself offer is highly valuable worth to your personal brand.
I know exactly who I am, why I exist and what my purpose is in life – but it is my responsibility to enhance it and make the value of my personal brand enticing for others to want to be around. I don’t want to sound arrogant – I’m just confident in who I am. In fact, the greater your branding, the greater the state of humility – at least for me it is.
Developing a popular or valuable brand in the business world is not easy – it takes work, time, effort and great energy. But the dividends it pays can’t be compared to the efforts it required in the first place.
II. Look back at your life’s experiences – that’s your basic training
Experience doesn’t often meet your dreams and desires; however, it’s a good indication to gauge your future by.
Because your experience often provides your proficiency, which will help fix somebody else’s problems.
I’m not saying that your experiences are the only indication as to why you exist in this life, but what I’m saying, is that it is a good indication, a good source to measure your purpose.
One thing I can promise you – regardless of your purpose for living or God’s will for your life, your experiences will eventually resurface by helping somebody else - in need of your experience. Think about that.
So what have you experience thus far? What have you struggled with that you overcame some time ago? What is it that if you were to go through it again, you’d know exactly what you will do next?
Those experiences can be used to measure why you heart beats for greatness the way it does. Part of your personal branding is hidden in your experiences in life.
Not all experiences are good. You may have had a physical illness that was nearly fatal – that does not make who you are. But the process that you went through and the stronger person you became shaped your branding and will encourage, admonish and inspire somebody who might be in the same situation.
Experiences are important but what you do with them is the key to your branding and will need to be properly directed.
III. Have a clear direction for your destination
If you’re going to be a leader in your area of expertise, you’re gonna have to have a vision for your life. It is important to have a vision in your own mind and heart.
In addition to the vision, it is also necessary to communicate the vision to be implemented in other people’s minds. Neil Patel put it this way: You can’t control every aspect of your life, but you can create a long-term vision and develop steps to achieve that vision.
This is not that hard to do. It sounds a little bit cumbersome, but it isn’t. It is simply the ability to structure and communicate your vision – your passion – your desires – and your promise to provide solutions.
The wisest man, Solomon, once said: “without vision people have no direction.” You can’t use a map or a GPS if you don’t have a destination.
You can’t hit the bull’s eye if there’s no target. Therefore, it is imperative that you know who you are, why you are who you are, and why you like what you like. Once you have this, you can develop your vision, which will reveal the nature of your brand. But there is more…
IV. Have a plan of action
I’ve heard it said a million times: “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
We don’t set out to fail in life – yet, without a plan or without feet to our vision, we often fail miserably in our walk of life.
I’ve known people that have gone the way of the grave with a great deal of untapped potential just because they didn’t have a plan of action.
This is the place where you set your sails in motion. This is the time to create your waves, a plan, set goals, set time frames, set limitations or expand your horizon.
This is where the vision begins to take shape and your heart’s desire become clear as your experiences begin to make things happen.
V. Bonus - One last word of advice: Don’t sweat it! Studying your true self, developing a vision for life and goal setting seems like a lot of work – and it is, but stressing over it leads you to and emotional freeze, which can lead you to major set-backs in your personal branding pursuit.
Just relax and enjoy who you are, who you want to become and who you want to portray. Let the real you come out, be developed and revealed.
I wonder: what have you done to help develop your personal branding? Please share in the comments below.
