6 Keys To Develop Your Dreams: The Secret In Other People's Dreams.

I had Big dreams.  Most of us did as kids and most of us still do.  Did you ever have the same kind of dreams I had?  You know, the dreams most kids have, like being a policeman, a firefighter and a popular singer and musician.

Later in life I had one dream – to be rich.  Yeah, don’t laugh, you did too.

Nothing wrong with wanting to be rich but life has its turns, surprises and things often turn out different than we initially hoped for.  You become more responsible and also learn that life is not what you thought it was while playing with toys and riding your bike around the block.

One thing we all learn

One thing we all eventually learn – whether you work for someone else or you work for yourself - the veracity that you will never work for yourself but always work for somebody else.

Even your own business, the truth is your business is driven by the needs of your customers.  If you don’t meet needs you have no business.  Right?  Right!

So in order to have a thriving career you produce quality products that accomplish something.  The reality is you never work for yourself – you always work for somebody else.

This is not a negative thing – it’s actually positive.  Think about it!
What you produce must have value given by
your own brand, which provides value to others.

What you produce must have value given by your own brand, which provides value to others.  This is why it is important to know who you are and why you exist.  Regardless of who makes or creates the product you offer, the value is always given by your brand.

Oh I’m not talking about your product’s branding – I’m talking about your personal brand – who you really are. Who you are will emanate the light inside of you to illuminate others in the right direction.

Let me break it down to you in plain English: you exist to make somebody else’s world a better one.  That’s it!  In turn, you create an awesome world for yourself.  Think about that.

I came to the realization a long time ago, that my life was designed to provide value to others making the world around me a better one.

I learned this truth when my wife and I began to have kids.  After studying the Bible for several years, getting married, and having kids this reality hit me.  I realized that I was no longer working for myself – I was now working for my family.  Wow, what a revelation that was!

You and I were created to make choices and when those choices are made to benefit others, in turn it yields huge dividends.  This authenticity falls under the long established law of “you reap what you sow.”

I then learned that if I worked for my family, my kids, and their future, then they will in turn learn to work for their families and their kid’s future.  This is what I call a “living a selfless life.”

My dreams - their dreams

In order for me to work for my family, I must be concerned for their well-being, putting their dreams and desires ahead of mine.  What happens with this is that their dreams and desires become mine.  In retrospect, my dream is all about making their dreams come true.

Isn’t this what having big dreams are all about in the first place?  The business world knows this – implementing it and living it from the heart is another story altogether.

In reality though, when done at an early age and when the cycle continues, the truth is, the kids capture the desires of the parent – most of the time – thus your own dreams eventually are revealed in their future.

It will be the child’s desires to please the parent without having to deny their own desires.  This is a mystery – yet one easily learned – but it takes work.
My dream is to help other people accomplish their dreams

Here are 6 keys to develop a selfless dream – one that develops other people’s dreams.

1.  Be a giver.
If you’re not used to giving things, charities, and the like, you need to start.  Find a good charity or project to support without strings attached.  This will help you experience the joy of giving which helps develop a selfless lifestyle.

2.  Become concerned for others.
I’m not saying that you’re not concerned for the betterment of other – particularly of your family.  But become concerned for the betterment of your community and your country.  This will help you develop some serious dreams that will generate a passion for a big deal, a big dream and a vision for life than you ever imagine.

3.  So let your heart be moved towards something greater than you – something that will stretch your skills and mess with your jitters – you know, something that makes you nervous.  Stretch yourself to give someone a better tomorrow.

4.  Start at home – if you have a family.
Begin by helping your spouse and your children develop their dreams.  You will soon discover that executing your own dreams become much easier and part of the building of their dreams as well.  Amazing how that works!

This is one of my biggest points in premarital counseling.  I teach the young couple how one of their main tasks is to help their spouse become all that they were designed to be.  Marriage is about your spouse, it’s never about you.  In return, you’ll wind up with the marriage you’ve always dreamed of.  I know, cause I am living proof of that.

5. Promote your kids/promote others.
When you make others higher than you, somehow, you become elevated.  I’ve discovered that late Zig Ziglar was right when he said:  “you get what you want when you help enough people get what they want.”

The truth is that when you promote your kids and other colleagues or businesses, you often get more businesses for yourself.  Again, this is the law of sowing and reaping.

I live in a small town, and often times I hear and see business owners refer their customers to other businesses across town for different reasons.  Conversely,

I’ve found myself in some of those stores as well when I hear the business owner sort of return the favor.  They seem to work with each other – even though they are often competing with each other.

The town recognizes that these people are not out to control and manipulate the community with their business, but rather, they are here to build one another.  Amazing how that works! These are the businesses that thrive in a small town.  There are others that don’t work that way – and they’ve also developed their own reputation.

6.  Find ways to help others build their business.
Your creativity comes more clearly as you help others with their dreams.  Your dreams will eventually become more clearly and easier to execute when you help others build theirs.  In reality, every business exists to solve a problem.  Your problem solving helps other businesses thrive.  Slick, isn’t it?
Life is about others, not about you.  Sorry but it’s true and somebody had to tell you that.  This realization has freed me up in many ways.  Just to think that the whole reason why I’m here in this earth is to develop a value system that will impact others around me become more of who they are designed to be is a great way to live.

I remember the time when every kid wanted to be like Michael Jordan.  Commercials and slogans were all over my school of wanting to “be like Mike.”  Not only did Michael Jordan become a legend in the basketball world, but he also became a value giver as he shared his failures and short comings during his high school years.  From the hoods to the colleges of America, kids were being influenced, encouraged and impacted by Michael’s values and dreams.

You have value.  Your value is for others to see, enjoy and partake of in order for their values of life to become better, richer and shared with others to continue the same cycle.  The problem comes when we take our own values and not share them, display them and give them away for others to enjoy.  Eventually, fear takes over and rejection and turmoil is the agenda of the day.

Let your value generate the dream of your life.  Let you dreams take you where your talents, skills and abilities can make a difference in someone else’s dreams.
